Turbo Oil Filter

Turbo Oil Filter

Gavin had an interesting YouTube video this morning. He introduced a different oil filter for the turbo. It has a 40 micron stainless steel element that is cleaned at each oil change. It’s made by Turbo Smart from Australia, but available in the US in the race car industry. The part that interests me is that it is quite small, therefore much lighter than a “normal” oil filter setup.

I saved about 2.5 lbs when I removed my filter. The one thing about Gavin’s filter, besides having a very small amount of filter area, is can it bypass if it gets clogged?

Not sure, but worth checking in to. They seem to be popular in the race car world.

Are you talking about this filter?

I use one on both my Revmaster and Lycoming engines. Very happy with them.

His filter looks different. It’s a very small inline filter. Is yours inline?

No, it’s just a can oil filter replacement for the throw away units. Not having the turbo I suppose I’m missing the picture. Do they use a second inline oil filter for the turbo?

Hopefully this works.

So do you only filter the turbo oil supply with that? Interesting idea. How much of the flow does the turbo get?

Yes
And have no idea (yet) what’s all involved in the turbo.

I wish Joe Norris would do another amazing set of engine videos, like the normally aspirated aerovee videos, for the turbo.
